I only met Laura once in Nanaimo at a restaurant owned by a mutual friend. She was preparing for her trip back out to Nova Scotia. We spoke for maybe 30 min. Full of light and life, following her dreams. I’ve thought of her often since, she will always be in my memories

  4. Beverly Hunter says:

You remain in our hearts Laura….and with your family. We grieve your loss even as we ask….
Why…why did the “captain” not go?
Why did the ship leave 2 months late?
Why was the “acting” captain no where to be found for the CBC Fifth Estate interviews?
Who was the person who called the “man overboard” alert?
    Who saw you go over?
Why did they lie about your orders? We knew you would never deliberately do something foolish or dangerous.
Why were you not allowed rest and sleep?
Why were the safety harnesses and life jackets not adequate? We visited the ship before you left and it was NOT impressive….we were afraid for you on this winter voyage…
why….why….why…are there so many unanswered questions?
We grieve for the senselessness of your loss….for the loss of your wonderful smile, your delightful laugh….we grieve and at the same time we know your families loss is the greatest and send our love to them in thoughts and prayers.
    Til we meet again…..

  5. Chris says:

Firstly I would like to express my sincere condolences at this tragic and unnecessary loss. My heart goes out to you.

Secondly, having watched the Fifth Estate documentary I am angry at the obvious lies and deceit shown by the owner of the vessel. His duplicity is more than apparent when confronted with videotape that clearly contradicts what he said about his safety policies. He clearly broke fundamental health and safety policies that are standard in any reputable workplace.

Accountability is at the root of ethics and character.

I look forward to the TSB inquiry results.

  6. Melissa says:

Although I never knew Laura, or her family. I am a big Montreal Canadiens fan, and a big Bob Gainey fan. When I first heard the news last year I was shocked and saddened for the family.
I reciently watched the report on the Fifth Estate and had a hard time watching it, I can’t imagine being the family.

She’s inspired many and has made a lot of people stronger.

  7. Billi says:

I think it’s wonderful how much life Laura lived in her short 25 years. She has inspired me, and I’m sure, many others.

My thoughts are with your family….

  8. Kim Champoux says:

Elle fesait parti d’une rare espèce.
Elle était de ceux qui vont aux jusqu’au bout d’eux-même.
L’océan lui a repris ce qu’il lui avait donné.

    Bon voyage

  9. Anthony McGarr says:

    I knew Laura through sailing..

She was in a Rally race with us in a Virginia to Virgin Gorda BVI
    Caribbean 1500 (2000)

She looked after my Yacht “Ciao Bella” after I had to return to Canada. We became good friends with her and her boyfriend from Halifax. I guess being the only other Canadians in the race we tend to look out for each other.

I remember a beautiful young girl with a passion for sailing..

    She will be missed

  10. Matt Kernan says:

I knew Laura back when the Gainey family lived in Coppell, TX. Some of my fondest memories of my teenage years are those spent hanging out with her. She was an amazing person and will be deeply missed. My deepest condolences go out to the Gainey family.
